Why Stonington, CT?

History of Stonington

Written by Judith du Pont (Taylor's Grandmother):

"Stonington is a magical place in the summer, and Taylor’s family has been enjoying that magic for four generations, her great-grandmother’s family having started coming to town over a hundred years ago.

The village, actually the oldest borough in Connecticut, is located on the easternmost shoreline of the state and looks out to the tip of Long Island, New York and past Block Island, Rhode Island to the Atlantic Ocean beyond. Since the town was originally settled in 1649, history greets you around every corner. The village bravely defended against an English attack in 1814, and a local sea captain named Nathaniel Palmer is credited with being the first American to discover Antarctica in 1821. Walks along the narrow village streets reveal picturesque front porches on the old houses, secret gardens, and lawns stretching down to the rocky waterfront. The busy shipbuilding and fishing docks have now given way to restaurants with umbrellaed tables, and the 1840 lighthouse on the point has been a museum for many years.

Taylor’s family started bringing her to Stonington for the summer at a very early age. Her days were filled with swimming, tennis, and sailing at the small club, long afternoons at the beach, bicycle riding, berry picking in the country, and fun evenings with friends. She has introduced Andrew to this traditional and beloved spot, and now they want to share with you."
